While sticking to the norm is a pretty typical M.O. for construction companies, one in California has decided to make a road completely from recycled plastic. Could this be a step towards a greener construction industry, and future with better waste disposal?

The news is a consistent source of entertainment, knowledge and discovery that never ceases to exist and always comes out with more and more material each day. “It may look like just ordinary paved road, but it’s actually being hailed as the first mile of recycled plastic highway on a state road anywhere in the U.S. Using more than 150,000 single-use plastic bottles, sustainable landscaping company TechniSoil partnered with state transit officials to create the one-mile road with three lanes in July 2020. According to CalTrans (California Department of Transportation), which already has slated the material for use throughout the state, the eco-friendly road formula has been shown to be 2-3 times more durable than traditional asphalt pavement. Not only is the formula more durable, Technisoil officials say the procedure generates 90% less greenhouse gas emissions than the process currently used by Caltrans. The company says that they have already begun working on launching additional plastic road projects across California. “This process is better for the environment because it keeps plastic bottles out of landfills and helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions and reliance on fossil fuels.” The state government has faith in this new system and believes it is an innovative step towards the future. Given that it has stronger features than normal asphalt, it looks like it’s here to stay.”

Domani, 4 luglio 2020, si celebra il 244esimo anno dall’indipendenza degli Stati Uniti d’America dal Regno di Gran Bretagna. Era il 1776, e tante cose sarebbero accadute da lì in poi.

Scrambled Eggs sceglie oggi per voi quindi un culture blog a sfondo politico: rivivremo quasi cent’anni di storia americana attraverso le figure carismatiche di 5 Presidenti che hanno letteralmente segnato un’era per questo paese. Ci concentreremo sul secolo scorso e su quello attuale, non dimenticando però di citare George Washington, primo Presidente in assoluto in carica dall’aprile 1789 al marzo 1797, e il famoso Abraham Lincoln, in carica per 4 anni prima di essere assassinato nel 1865 (a tal proposito vi consigliamo il film ‘Lincoln’ del 2012, diretto da Steven Spielberg e con un eccellente Daniel Day-Lewis, ovviamente da gustare in lingua originale ?).

Ovviamente, in questo preambolo, una menzione va fatta per ovvie ragioni anche al Presidente forse più amato e più popolare della seconda metà del 20° Secolo, John Fitzgerald Kennedy (spesso noto come JFK), anch’egli assassinato nel novembre ’63, dopo quasi tre anni di mandato. Il più giovane Presidente eletto, a 44 anni, è però anche uno di quelli con il mandato più corto nell’intero 20° secolo; è per questo motivo che non verrà presa in considerazione la sua figura in questa speciale classifica (nonostante, comunque, un susseguirsi di eventi interessanti ad inizio anni ’60, come la corsa alla Luna, l’invasione di Cuba e gli antefatti della guerra del Vietnam, nonché un’effervescenza sociale riguardo i diritti civili degli afroamericani).
